Govt to waive HECS debts in education-focused ‘Closing the Gap’ strategy

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a plan to waive teachers’ HECS debts if they work in remote Indigenous schools as part of a major revamp in this year’s ‘Closing the Gap’ strategy. Based on recommendations from Special Envoy on Indigenous Affairs Tony Abbott, up to 3,100 teachers at almost 300 schools will benefit from the plan if they commit to working in the remote locations for four years. A further $177 million has been committed to boosting secondary education attendance, including mentoring for students. Only two of the seven targets, aimed at improving health, longevity and education of Indigenous people, have been met from the original report. Image: Twitter / @TonyAbbottMHR
